Constitution and rules
Adopted at the first Annual General Meeting held on the 20 July
1956. Revised at the third AGM (1959), at the eighth AGM (1964),
at the fourteenth AGM (1970), at the twenty-second AGM (1978),
at the twenty-third AGM (1979), at the thirtieth AGM (1988), at
the thirty-sixth AGM (1994), at the forty-third AGM (2001) and
at the forty-fourth AGM (2002).
Membership
1. Full Membership of the Association shall be open to:
a. Anciens and Honorary Anciens of the NATO Defense College who
are citizens of the United Kingdom.
b. Anciens and Honorary Anciens of the NATO Defense College, not
being citizens of the United Kingdom, who are resident in, or
based in the United Kingdom.
Honorary and Associate Membership
2. a. Honorary Membership. UK citizens holding key NATO posts,
or serving on NATO staffs, or holding NATO-related appointments
in the MOD may be granted Honorary Membership of the Association
for the duration of their appointments. Officers from countries
other than the UK who have served on the Committee of the
Association shall have Honorary Life Membership conferred upon
them. Honorary Members are not Full Members.
b. Associate Membership. Spouses and widows/widowers of members
and their children over the age of eighteen years may be
Associate Members and as such, may take part in all the social
activities of the Association. Associate Members are not Full
Members.
Objectives
3. The objectives of the Association shall be:
a. To afford every support to the NATO Defense College, to
maintain the links between Members, between them and the College
and with sister Associations.
b. To support the North Atlantic Alliance, by helping to spread
knowledge of its objectives and achievements and by cultivating
the NATO spirit.
President, Officers and Committee
4. There shall be a President and up to three Vice Presidents of
the Association, an Honorary Chairman, an Honorary Secretary, an
Honorary Treasurer and a Committee of not fewer than three nor
more than five who must all be Full Members of the Association.
They shall be selected at the end of the Annual General Meeting
by Full Members there present and shall hold office until the
end of the ensuing Annual General Meeting. Casual vacancies in
the Committee shall be filled by the co-option of Full Members.
5. The Committee may co-opt ad hoc additional persons who may be
Full Members or Honorary Members.
Meetings
6. There shall be an Annual General Meeting of the Association
to be held in the autumn of each year. Extraordinary General
Meetings may be held at any time at the request of the President
(or Vice President), or upon written request made to him and
signed by no fewer than four full members. At any General
Meeting there shall be a quorum of eight full members.
Subscriptions
7. Full Members shall pay a single subscription for Life
Membership of the Association at the time of joining, the sum*
to be approved by an Annual General Meeting of the Association.
Honorary and Associate Members are not required to pay a
subscription.
